Not just at the very beginning, when we see a scene of a washed up, overweight LaMotta practicing his act for a scant audience, but also with his first wife and unhappy marriage. He is an animal despite how well he fights, despite all the good that comes to him.įor all the explosiveness of his skill, and the professional heights he would achieve, Raging Bull makes a point of summing up LaMotta's life at the beginning of the film. In the ring he embraces being called the raging bull, but here it hurts because it is true in the worst ways. Near the beginning of the film he is called an animal, and it gets under his skin. He always seems to lose by decision his decisions. And so it goes for his life, never quite measuring up to the man he thinks he should be. His opponent is knocked out and the referee makes it to a nine count before the bell rings and the match is over. With just one second short, Jake LaMotta's undefeated streak is broken. From the first fight shown, we see a man, who, at his best, finds that his best is not good enough. How can a man who achieves so much, amount to so little? Raging Bull is a portrait of insecurity and inadequacy.
